RELEASE: Roddy Reynaert – Higher Cognitive Process [Ifonika]

releases

As you enter the “Higher Cognitive Process,” you are immediately hit with a sense of wonder as to what you are about to hear, to feel, to experience. The layered synth melodies combined with the pulsating baselines of “Paracas” grip you firmly and never lets go. “Golden Ratio” begins with a greater emphasis on percussion. As it dives into another series of complimentary primary and secondary melodies, my head is immediately bobbing up and down in line with the powerful driving baseline. The breakdown is as smooth as a newborn’s fanny, and the primary melody is infectious and becomes entangled with a series of secondary synths that come in and out of the aural environment with great fluidity. If you can’t tell this is one of my choice selections off the album. The flawless production aside, the entrancing vibe is what makes this track a highlight for me as a listener and a set staple as a DJ.

With all of the pleasantries out of the way, Roddy Reynaert really dives into the deep end with “Awaken.” This track really brings the intensity and is definitely darker than its predecessors. This is the moment in the night where the club lights go down and the strobes and lasers turn on. Both trance influence is very evident here, and it works to perfection. What can I say about the next song? “Ahnk” is supported by all the top progressive and trance DJs across the world for a reason. It is packed with energy, evokes emotion, and makes you want to party. Can’t ask for much more than that in my opinion. The next track is one you have to listen to a few times to really grasp the full scope. If I didn’t know any better I would have thought I was listening to an Eric Prdyz set. In fact, I would be both surprised and saddened if Eric did not unleash this bad boy at Madison Square Garden later this year. It’s a weapon, pure and simple. And yes, you guessed it, “Vimana” is another favorite from the album.
“Angkor Wat” is a song previously released on Ifonika. I featured it in a mix last summer, for those of you who have been paying attention. For the album, Roddy puts a slightly different spin on the previous version, and I dig it. Playing this in a club is an incredible rush. The track pulsates through the speakers and puts the audience in a trance. The vibe is both dark and sensual, and I fucking love that about the track. Easily one of my favorites off the album…might even take the top spot.

Now I will touch on the track generating the most noise throughout the industry is “Yssim.” It an extremely complex track that gives off a really fun, bouncy vibe, and uses a number of really unique synths that would die to get my hands on (cough…cough). While it’s not my favorite, it definitely does a number on the dance floor. This chart topper is followed up by “Ellora.” And oh is she a beauty. Again, a lot of Prydz influence here. You are immediately surrounded by two lovely melodies that work in tandem as they take you into extremely powerful yet crisp baseline that really tests the speakers. Oh and that insane break down in the middle? Um yeah, hopefully I’m not the only one who had to go find a fresh pair of undies. When it’s all said and done, this one is my #1 on the album without question. I was absolutely blown away.
Full trance mode now as you enter “Green Eye Shine.” A really fun, synth dominated track with a familiar bouncy rhythm. Then Roddy slows the tempo a bit with “Discovery” and slides in with a real sexy groove. Definitely don’t sleep on this one people. Let it grow on you. Really special track and very well made.

As the album enters the final stages, Roddy loses me a bit with “Cuzco” and “Mellon.” If I had to choose any I don’t particularly like from the album, it would be these two. It’s like that hot girl you really want to get down with, but you just couldn’t make through dinner. The last three tracks on the album however are fantastic. “Youthed” features some really cool ambient sounds to go with the sexy, echoing lead melody. In short, I dig it. “Ring Of Templars” and “Goodbye” finish the album off in a very unique, and unforgettable fashion. Both fall into the chill out category on Beatport, but don’t let that fool you, they are full of emotion and are just as powerful as the club style tracks earlier in the album.
When its all said and done, Roddy’s debut album has helped put Ifonika on the map, and I cannot wait for what is in store for the rest of 2014 and years to come. Please, for the love of God, tell me a US tour is in the works.

SPOTLIGHT: TÂCHES

If you don’t know…now you know. TÂCHES is blowing (excuse my french) the fuck up. Can’t wait to experience his potent, original sound live. If you’re looking for beautiful vocal sampling and hauntingly deep vibes, look no further. The latest production is called “Malindi” and features Jessica Sophie on the vocals. The synth melodies and deep sub bass take you into a dream world full of flickering lights and sexual suggestion. I’m certainly feeling this one in all the right places. Just a warning, you may get an urge to be very very naughty. Give into the vibes. I will leave you with a description from the anonymous UK-based producer himself…

“Hello. These are some sounds I made late at night. I can’t say I was tired but I was certainly dreaming.”

Can’t get enough? Though that might happen…Here is real nice groovy remix of Naughty Boy‘s track with Wiz Khalifa called “Think About It.” TÂCHES simply makes something good into something great, and this is just exhibit A…

I will leave you with this mix for Pulse Radio. It features some unreleased gems, some recently released original tracks, and some really tasteful selections from the likes of Andhim and Miguel Puente, oh and not to mention, the powerful rendition of Marvin Gaye‘s “Heard It Through The Grapevine” by Romanian producer Sllash. It’s strong to quite strong…trust me. Press play and thank me later. The vibes don’t lie.

RELEASE: Sonic Future – Chameleon EP [Suara]

artworks-000074548727-qs83ur-t500x500

Sonic Future is a duo from Brazil consisting of Cesar Funck and VJ Leo and these guys have become a staple in my sets as of late. Always equipped with funky baselines and warm grooves, their tracks have received huge support from the industry from the likes of Maceo Plex, Tube & BergerNoir, and many more! This new EP on Suara consists of a four sensational tracks. The title track, “L.O.V.E.” absolutely dominates dance floors with an a sexy baseline melody and vocals that seem to chant as the groove penetrates you. The next track is a collaboration with Do Santos called “About The Summer,” and this one has one clear message that can be found in pretty much every aspect of the production: the thick, dark, sensual baseline and synth melodies give the track a real dope vibe and the vocals employ a mellow kind of confidence that takes me poolside behind a pair of shades. “Numb” takes you deeper into a land of ambient noises, strong emotion, and warm pads, but then brings you back with a nice diving rhythm. The last track is called “Bring it On” and features a really soulful piano melody, some haunting vocal sampling, and a very powerful drop into an undeniable baseline that invites us to get close and dance closer.

“The Animal Party” – Sahara Oasis @ Harlot – San Francisco, CA – TAVISWILD x WALLACE x WILKI [04.11.14]

The Animal Party launched November 2012 at Harlot (www.harlotsf.com) in San Francisco and quickly became the city’s most popular monthly party. The production is TRAVISWILD’s (www.TRAVISWILD.com) monthly residency and often includes special guests like Thomas Jack, Hohme, Panic City, John Beaver and other rising talents. For those unfamiliar with “The Animal Party,” the event takes place each month with a different animal-related sub-theme. Patrons dress up as various creatures and dance the night away in the transformed venue. In less than a year after launching THE ANIMAL PARTY in SF it was successfully expanded to East Hampton, NY in the summer of 2013 and in November of 2013, exactly one year after establishing himself as king of the Animal Kingdom, THE ANIMAL PARTY and TRAVISWILD secured bi-monthly residency at Riff Raff’s in NYC. What started as an idea for a housewarming party has now transformed into a bi-coastal high quality production that is nothing short of a WILD experience.

The second time Travis brought the The Animal Party through NYC, we did a special Wallace vs. Wilki b2b set before Travis came on to rip up the place. So many close friends came out to get wild with us that night and kept the place rocking until 5am…ya, things got weird.  Our close friends, Sabrina Burda and Natalie Dodge, aka SBND, warmed things up for  for Travis at the last event at Riff Raff’s on April 4th. Similar to Will and myself, they have developed an infatuation for those deep grooves and melodic vibes, so needless to say, the stage was set quite nicely. Travis took over the decks dropping some ghouse beats, and then as the night progressed he got into some fresh progressive vibes. The drinks were flowing, lights / digital mapping were on point, and the music was spot on…per usual.

This time the show is back out on the better coast at Harlot. Pick up your tickets below and I can’t wait to see all my west coast friends and fans out showing off that animal spirit!

Tickets WILL sell out so Purchase Tickets ASAP to ensure entrance.

Visit the Facebook Event Page for more details!

And check out the guys’ Soundcloud pages for fresh podcasts and mixes to get you in the mood for this Friday’s show :)
