Funky Fraiche Friday [12.7.2012]

We’re back with another edition of “Funky Fraiche Friday” kids. Been kinda busy lately, so this one is gonna be fairly compact. I have a couple mixes for you that have really been helping with my patience while in excel all week, and I have also included a select few tracks that are simply essential. Have a good weekend and keep it fraiche.

Sharam Jey continues to blow my mind. Track by track, his forthcoming album, “Bunny Tiger,” is shaping up to be a masterpiece. A ton of original stuff like this one. This will definitely be one of those times where you want every track. Dude is a g…for genius.

Everyone can agree with this statement…The Knocks are 100% cash money in pretty much every way. And the intro to this mix…might be the best thing I have ever heard. Ever. And the mix as a whole is the best mix I have heard from the NYC duo in some time.

Funky Fraiche Friday [11.09.2012]

As of late, this thing called a “job,” and the extracurricular activities that fill my free time have caused yet another missed week in the annals of Funky Fraiche Friday posting. That said, it’s time to get funky and we have quite the menu for you this week. Featured artists include Louis La Roche, RAC, Alex Metric, Pete Tong, Hot Since 82, Tradelove, Classixx, Star Slinger, and many more! Enjoy ze beats.

Passion Pit’s hit single received an elegant rework from Classixx. Take me to the clouds.

And now let’s get a bit more funky with some disco house. Solidisco has quickly become a go to in my sets when I need people on the dance floor movin’ those feet. Here is there latest release. It’s fraiche and free. Enjoy!

Here is a new mix from Star Slinger. It’s fantastically funky and soulful. You need it.

TRACKLIST:

1. BONDAX – I GOT THAT
2. CHRIS E. PANTS – PASS IT AROUND
3. PERSEUS – SEYCHELLES

15. STAR SLINGER – TAKE THIS UP

Here we have two very different but equally solid remixes from Louis La Roche that will make you want to get rowdy. Our advice…don’t think about it. Do it.

Classixx on the original called “Stranger Love.” RAC on the remix. Simply essential. The vocals are angelic…in an indie way (whatever that means)…the beats are bouncy, and the groove is impecable.

Here is a naughty tech house remix from Tradelove. It’s dirty but ooooh so good.

Taken you a bit deeper on these next two. First one is a remix of Jean Winner’s “Alive And Kicking” from Zimmer. So sensual. Diggin’ this hard.

When Pete Tong puts out music…you listen. Check out this Hot Since 82 dub mix of his track “Dawn” featuring S.Y.F. Soooo deep, so funky.

Lastly, here is one of my favorite mixes of the past month. Defected only hosts the best DJs, and Miguel Campbell is just that. Top tier. His shit is just hot. What can you say?

Later in the post you will get some individual tracks from a plethora of artists that have that one essential thing in common…ze funky beats. Enjoy kids.

Now we got some individual tracks that will surely have those asses shakin’ till the mornin’ light. And if you don’t like dancing, steer clear…well what I meant to say is, fuck off.

Yea, that’s right. Dillon Francis gets funky too, just in a more..how you say….letsgetfuckingweird way. This track is going to be insane.

Only good vibes here. Vocals crush it. DCUP takes care of the beats, and he’s always on point. Night time = Dance time.

All we are asking on this one is…do you like to get deep? Cause we do. Frequently. This one is out on Nov 12th via Defected Records. Nick Curly, you’re a legend. Respect brotha.

Chill electronic vibes, breaks, vocal sampling, dope synths, etc. This track has everything. Never thought a remix of a Skrillex track could sound better than the original, but here you go. Blende’s baseline on the drop and overall production genius make this one an absolutely ESSENTIAL free download.

Here is one for the night cap this evening. Turn down the lights. Maybe light some candles. Press play. Make love (gentle, but firm…very firm). Repeat.

Sorry I didn’t post more…crunched for time. But this should satisfy you for now. Happy donsing children. Wilki out.

Funky Fraiche Friday [09.28.12]

Sadly, summer is over. But, do not fret. To quote F. Scott Fitzgerald, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” And nothing says new beginnings than blacking out hard on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon at Sidebar…still recovering. I guess what I’m really trying to say is that fall is pretty sweet. Probably my favorite season, though college springs were nice too…dammit I miss you…cue tear). I mean, you’ve got football (real refs back, thank God), Mit Romney’s downfall as a direct result of a smart phone video (gotta love technology), and simplest of all joys, not sweating through my clothes to and from anywhere in the city. Now that all that is off my chest, let the funk take over. This week we start of similar to last week with some new music from Late Nite Tuff Guy. Then we get into a mixes from the likes of Luigi Rocca, Miguel Migs, and Prok & Fitch, and then some new tracks from WhiteNoize, Star Slinger, Gigamesh, Alex Metric, and Solidisco.

LNTG always goes down smooth and leaves a wonderful aftertaste. Great touch up on a classic soulful R&B track from the least fucked up of the Jacksons.

Mix time. We start off with the sensual sounds of Miguel Migs. Perfect for lazy afternoons, stress relief at the office, one-on-one candlelight dance sessions, and twisting blunts.

Tracklist:

01. The White Lamp ‘Its You’ (Mix 2 Edit) (Future Boogie Records)
02. Blank & Jones ‘Happiness’ (Miguel Migs Salted Dub)
03. DJ Fudge ‘Garito Breeze’
04. Husky feat. Alyson Joyce ‘Crazy Enough’ (Edit) (Salted)
05. Alysha Kid ‘Mei Bee (Dufflebag Records)
06. Zenbi feat. Martina Camargo ‘Locombia’ (Deeplomatik Remix) (Salted)

13. Arco ‘Where You At (Salted)
14. Ladybird ‘Highlight My Life’ (Bitter Suite Dub)

Next we add some more bass and speed up the tempto a bit with some dope house grooves from Luigi Rocca, one of the heads of the 303Lovers label. His mixing skills are top-notch. Take notes.

You should be familiar with these guys by now. It’s Prok & Fitch with another solid episode of their Floorplay Podcast. This is the point where the chatter stops, and the dancing takes you over. The second track is a new fav of mine. Gorgeous vocals.

12. Eigo – Bring it (Original) Ministry
13. John Dahlback – Sing That (original) Toolroom

Now we enter the singles section. A smorgasbord of new music from various artists. And we begin with a new free original track from WhiteNoize.

Now let’s get a little weird with some hip-hop, slowsteppin’, deep grooves from Star Slinger. Dedicated to the ladies in the back. Love what my man’s been doing lately. Fire. Oh and to be informative…there is also an instrumental if you don’t dig the lyrical version.

Speed it back up. Solidisco is creating that new age, modern disco, house music. And they are killin’ it. Here is their new Daft Punk remix. Fo free. Fraiche.

Gigamesh is always reliable for groovy disco. This one is a remix of the sing-a-long styled Moullinex single “Take My Pain Away.” It does just that. After all, we are all on a sort of pursuit of happiness…are we not?

And we will end with Alex Metric’s fantastically funky take on Ellie Goulding’s latest single, “Anything Could Happen.” The dude is next level. Sampling is so on point.

Funky Fraiche Friday [09.21.2012]

This weeks edition of “Funky Fraiche Friday” comes to you live and direct from my couch, hungover as shit, on Saturday morning. Yes, I ate pizza last night, and yes, I ended up face down on my couch instead of my unbelievably comfortable king-sized bed. So basically, feeling somewhat defeated today after an unsuccessful trip to Brooklyn and a failed foursome…yea, you heard me. But hey, it’s sunny out, and i’ll be frolicking in Central Park with a bunch of other likeminded house music lovers in about 8 hours while we have a little partay with the crew from Size Records. Yea, I see you Steve. Get it. So, before you get back on that horse today, check out our menu of funky beats.

Can you feel it coming? Late Nite Tuff Guy can. And it feels like money.

Here is some a dat new RAC shit. One free download, one new mix. Both very essential.

Funky Fraiche Friday [09.14.2012]

Believe it or not, I was actually on my game this week. This was prepared over the course of the whole week, and is one of the most robust editions of “Funky Fraiche Friday” to date, so I hope you enjoy it. This week we are featuring free downloads from Breakbot, Plastic Plates, and Star Slinger, plus new releases and previews from Louis La Roche, Jacques Lu Cont, Monkey Safari, and Simon Shout, and a new mix from Prince Language that has a heartfelt message and purpose. But, we start out with one of the legends and spiritual founders of this post…oh ya, that’s Mr. James Brown. He reminds us 1) that it’s all in the baseline, and 2) that this is real dancing. Take notes.

Let’s kick things off with a free download taken from the new Breakbot album “By Your Side,” which is scheduled for release next week on Ed Banger.

Haven’t caught up with my man Star Slinger in a while. Rediscovering his music is like rekindling an old flame…and by “rekindle” do the horizontal mambo. Pick his latest production, “Take This Up” up for free below. It’s superb.

And we briefly take you a bit deeper with a fraiche EP called “Things I Didn’t Know I Loved” from Plastic Plates. The title track features vocals from the soulful and wise, Simon Lord. They are also giving the Amine Edge & DANCE remix…extra deep for those sensual moments…away for free. Which is nice. The other two tracks are available for preview and purchase via their Soundcloud. For the free remix click here FREE DOWNLOAD.

Louis La Roche is a staple of these posts. Here’s another reason why. So smooth.

Jacques Lu Cont insanely diverse and talented. Such a wide range of production styles and techniques. Gotta respect the man. The results ain’t to shabby either. This one is going to be big. Check out the preview of his new track “In The Night.” Epic baseline.

John Dahlback continues to impress. This new track is just pure genius. From a production stand point, it doesn’t get that much better than this dude. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. He is the most talented and diverse Swedish producer. Period.

Simon Shout usually produces progressive stuff, but this is a preview of his first tech house track, and may I say…it’s pretty dope. Title is “Here To Move.” Seems only appropriate, cause he makes it impossible not to. Really looking forward to this release.

Ok, it’s official, I have developed a strong obsession for Monkey Safari. This song is a perfect 10 in my book. So funky, yet so dreamy. Great vibes.

Enter the mix…

The first of the two mixes with have today comes from DCUP, and it is a sort of introduction to his new label, CHOOKIE. Creative name…still not sure what it means, but it is definitely not concerning me in the least. To paraphrase Bill Belichick (in reference to drafting Warren Saap out of college), I want to be on this label so badly “my dick is hard.” True stories…both. Seriously.

Tracklist available via Soundcloud…bascially it was too much effort to type out. Sorry.

Lastly, here is a mix from Prince Language. As you can sense by this point…we are fans of Prince Language. So much respect for him as an artist and a person. This mix was done especially for his friend and fellow artist, Michael Richards, who was killed in 9/11. Read the full dedication below.

“On the morning of September 11, 2001, my friend Michael Richards was working in his studio on the 92nd floor of Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. He was a resident artist there as part of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s World Views program. Michael was an incredibly gifted artist and sculptor whose work addressed tragic aspects of African-American history through a poignant, poetic, and ultimately transcendant use of iconography. Ironically, much of his work dealt with flight, and the history of the Tuskegee Airmen, as a theme.

Michael grew up in Kingston, Jamaica, and loved reggae. I originally met him through our mutual friend, the curator Franklin Sirmans, who knew that we would have this in common. Shortly after Michael’s death, Franklin asked me to make a reggae mix to be played at a memorial gathering he was organizing at the Studio Museum of Harlem, where Michael was also an artist in residence, on September 23, 2001. Beginning with King Tubby’s elegiac dub of The Aggrovators “I Shall Be Released” entitled “Release The Dub”, the songs I gathered addressed the mood of mourning that we New Yorkers felt in the wake of the attacks, as well as the themes of love, war, struggle, hope, spirituality and release that are so beautifully expressed in Reggae music. This is the original recording of that mix.

I thought that today, 11 years from the attack that took his and many others lives, was a fitting day to share this small memorial for Michael. I hope you can take the time to explore his powerful work and rich legacy. I miss him.”

Funky Fraiche Friday [09.07.2012]

Once again, this weeks edition of “Funky Fraiche Friday” is being posted on Saturday. What else? Anyways, we have a fairly nice menu this week. A few mixes, some new tracks…you know how we do. If it’s funky, we post it. Enjoy.

First, we have a nice free bootleg from Bastian Van Shield. Swaggerific.

Monkey Safari is a great new find. Simply epic beats and the creativity is splendid. They hail from Germany and recorded this set live. Pretty dope.

Poolside is nice lazy afternoon, smoke a j, take it easy music. So soulful baby.

And lastly, The Magician gives us an absolutely essential mixtape. Full of exclusive and unreleased tracks. Press play. You’re in for a treat.

Keep it funky children.
