RELEASE: Roddy Reynaert – Higher Cognitive Process [Ifonika]

releases

As you enter the “Higher Cognitive Process,” you are immediately hit with a sense of wonder as to what you are about to hear, to feel, to experience. The layered synth melodies combined with the pulsating baselines of “Paracas” grip you firmly and never lets go. “Golden Ratio” begins with a greater emphasis on percussion. As it dives into another series of complimentary primary and secondary melodies, my head is immediately bobbing up and down in line with the powerful driving baseline. The breakdown is as smooth as a newborn’s fanny, and the primary melody is infectious and becomes entangled with a series of secondary synths that come in and out of the aural environment with great fluidity. If you can’t tell this is one of my choice selections off the album. The flawless production aside, the entrancing vibe is what makes this track a highlight for me as a listener and a set staple as a DJ.

With all of the pleasantries out of the way, Roddy Reynaert really dives into the deep end with “Awaken.” This track really brings the intensity and is definitely darker than its predecessors. This is the moment in the night where the club lights go down and the strobes and lasers turn on. Both trance influence is very evident here, and it works to perfection. What can I say about the next song? “Ahnk” is supported by all the top progressive and trance DJs across the world for a reason. It is packed with energy, evokes emotion, and makes you want to party. Can’t ask for much more than that in my opinion. The next track is one you have to listen to a few times to really grasp the full scope. If I didn’t know any better I would have thought I was listening to an Eric Prdyz set. In fact, I would be both surprised and saddened if Eric did not unleash this bad boy at Madison Square Garden later this year. It’s a weapon, pure and simple. And yes, you guessed it, “Vimana” is another favorite from the album.
“Angkor Wat” is a song previously released on Ifonika. I featured it in a mix last summer, for those of you who have been paying attention. For the album, Roddy puts a slightly different spin on the previous version, and I dig it. Playing this in a club is an incredible rush. The track pulsates through the speakers and puts the audience in a trance. The vibe is both dark and sensual, and I fucking love that about the track. Easily one of my favorites off the album…might even take the top spot.

Now I will touch on the track generating the most noise throughout the industry is “Yssim.” It an extremely complex track that gives off a really fun, bouncy vibe, and uses a number of really unique synths that would die to get my hands on (cough…cough). While it’s not my favorite, it definitely does a number on the dance floor. This chart topper is followed up by “Ellora.” And oh is she a beauty. Again, a lot of Prydz influence here. You are immediately surrounded by two lovely melodies that work in tandem as they take you into extremely powerful yet crisp baseline that really tests the speakers. Oh and that insane break down in the middle? Um yeah, hopefully I’m not the only one who had to go find a fresh pair of undies. When it’s all said and done, this one is my #1 on the album without question. I was absolutely blown away.
Full trance mode now as you enter “Green Eye Shine.” A really fun, synth dominated track with a familiar bouncy rhythm. Then Roddy slows the tempo a bit with “Discovery” and slides in with a real sexy groove. Definitely don’t sleep on this one people. Let it grow on you. Really special track and very well made.

As the album enters the final stages, Roddy loses me a bit with “Cuzco” and “Mellon.” If I had to choose any I don’t particularly like from the album, it would be these two. It’s like that hot girl you really want to get down with, but you just couldn’t make through dinner. The last three tracks on the album however are fantastic. “Youthed” features some really cool ambient sounds to go with the sexy, echoing lead melody. In short, I dig it. “Ring Of Templars” and “Goodbye” finish the album off in a very unique, and unforgettable fashion. Both fall into the chill out category on Beatport, but don’t let that fool you, they are full of emotion and are just as powerful as the club style tracks earlier in the album.
When its all said and done, Roddy’s debut album has helped put Ifonika on the map, and I cannot wait for what is in store for the rest of 2014 and years to come. Please, for the love of God, tell me a US tour is in the works.

Sonic Future is a duo from Brazil consisting of Cesar Funck and VJ Leo and these guys have become a staple in my sets as of late. Always equipped with funky baselines and warm grooves, their tracks have received huge support from the industry from the likes of Maceo Plex, Tube & BergerNoir, and many more! This new EP on Suara consists of a four sensational tracks. The title track, “L.O.V.E.” absolutely dominates dance floors with an a sexy baseline melody and vocals that seem to chant as the groove penetrates you. The next track is a collaboration with Do Santos called ”About The Summer,” and this one has one clear message that can be found in pretty much every aspect of the production: the thick, dark, sensual baseline and synth melodies give the track a real dope vibe and the vocals employ a mellow kind of confidence that takes me poolside behind a pair of shades. “Numb” takes you deeper into a land of ambient noises, strong emotion, and warm pads, but then brings you back with a nice diving rhythm. The last track is called “Bring it On” and features a really soulful piano melody, some haunting vocal sampling, and a very powerful drop into an undeniable baseline that invites us to get close and dance closer.

Epic new EP from one of my favorite Anjunabeats artists, Ilan Bluestone. Fresh off of his latest hit single “Spheres” he drops a huge 3 track EP featuring entrancing melodies and euphoric synths. Huge support across the industry including legends, Above & Beyond. Been playing “Waves of LA” a lot and really dig the vibes. What’s your favorite?

Enjoy the vibes. They sound great on repeat.

RELEASE: Avicii – You Make Me (Throttle Remix) [PRMD]

Avicii really hit it big with the original of “You Make Me.” It is definitely one of the best tracks on his new album…regardless of what all those haters out there may say about the album as a whole. But this remix…whoa. Throttle is a young producer out of Melbourne who has burst onto the scene over the past few months with his impressive brand of “dirty disco.” Not only does he do wonders with a mashup, but his originals are quite impressive as well. He has some extremely catchy piano/synth melodies and combines them with high-energy disco/electro drops that will have any crowd on its feet in seconds. I like to think of his sound as a cross between Dada Life and Madeon. He has certainly caught my attention and just may have restored by faith in that electro sound.

RELEASE: Pryda – Rotonda [Pryda Recordings]

7644882Eric really is spoiling us this summer. Been waiting for this track for years. In case you missed it, here is his EDC Vegas set this past weekend. Continuing with his ‘Black Dice’ theme, this one is dark to very dark. Not for the casual ‘Everyday’ listener (although he does give them what they want at the end). I’d bet that ‘Personal Jesus’ edit doesn’t suck live either.

Gerard de la Disco – Radiant Future EP

gerard-de-la-disco

Not sure that this is technically a release since two of the four tracks are not available for purchase or free download. Honestly, who gives a shit. My office just allowed Soundcloud past the firewall. Fuck ya. Anyways, Gerard de la Disco is a ghost. A ghost that loves to make sexy disco music. Yes, there is little know about this bro, but his sound is phenomenal and technique is superb. Props bro, we diggin’ the summer vibes. Oh and thanks for the free tunes. Download “The Future” and “Don’t Wake Me Up” below.

He is a man of excellence. He is a man of distinction. He is a man of passion. But most of all, he is a man of disco.
